This story of Jonah really has it all: a prophet (Jonah) who rebels, pagan sailors who repent, and a fish who swallows a man! But, I think the most compelling part is what is described in our reading today. Nineveh was Israel’s absolute foremost worst enemy. Because of this, they brutally tortured Israelites they had captured, and Jonah knew that, which may have contributed to his fear in going there.
Our reading describes a much different Nineveh. It has a king who humbles himself and makes a decree that goes so far as to say the animals need to repent with them by wearing garments of mourning. What an amazing change! Maybe you or someone you know needs a change. Don’t wait until our local or national leadership requires you to dress your animals in garments of mourning; start making the change now!
