Day 19- The Ten Servants
Read it: Luke 19:11-27
Live it:
Once again in this parable, Luke gives us a heads-up concerning the intent of the story. This time, the purpose of the parable is to correct some incorrect assumptions concerning the coming of the Kingdom. Some were saying the Kingdom would be made manifest right away, but Jesus wanted his hearers and us to understand that there may be an unexpected time period before the revelation of the Kingdom.
In this parable, a nobleman was preparing to go on a long journey to be crowned king over some territory. He called ten servants in and gave each of them a pound of silver with instructions to invest it and make a profit for him. As the nobleman left, the servants sent a delegation after him, declaring that they did not want this man as their king. He was crowned king, nonetheless. When he returned, he summoned his servants for an accounting of their activity. We don’t know the results that seven of the servants had, but three are held out as an example.
One multiplied his investment by 10 and another by 5. Both of these men, because of their faithfulness to the assigned task, were established as governors over 10 and 5 cities, respectively. A third servant merely returned what he was given. He had done nothing, so what meager amount he had was given to the one who had earned 10 times his investment.
The moral of this story is to be faithful. Do your best. Have something to show for what God has invested in you. If you do, you will be rewarded.
