Day 7: David and Bathsheba

Read it: 2 Samuel 11

Live it:

Our Bible reading today begins by describing the sin David fell into after taking a nap. One careless decision led to a series of devastating consequences. When Bathsheba became pregnant, David’s response was not repentance but an attempt to cover up his sin. He tried to deceive Uriah, and when that failed, he gave instructions to Joab to  have Uriah sent to the front lines of the fiercest battle—and then he asked Joab to abandon Uriah so he would be killed. Uriah and several other Israelite soldiers were killed

What trust Uriah had in David. He carried the very message that sealed his fate, unaware of the betrayal it contained. Imagine the moment: the forces pull back, Uriah is left exposed, and he is killed. David was willing to go to any length to hide his sin, even at the cost of innocent lives (not just Uriah, but several others).

David didn’t wake up from his nap intending to wreak havoc on his relationships, but sin took hold and led to destruction. We can have the best support system—our church, trusted people around us, and the right tools—but if we let sin creep in and take a foothold, it can wreak havoc on our lives and relationships.

But here’s the good news: no matter how far we fall, we always have someone to turn to. Jesus shows us how to love others, even when we fail. Aren’t you thankful for Jesus? We can always turn to Him for forgiveness and restoration.
