Live it:
Richard Foster’s chapter on Simplicity in Celebration of Discipline argues that this discipline is an inward reality that naturally flows into an outward lifestyle. True simplicity is found only when our primary focus is centered on the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, bringing freedom, joy, and balance.
Jesus addressed lifestyle driven by economic issues more frequently than any other social concern, warning of the spiritual traps that wealth can create. While accumulating resources is not inherently evil, material things can easily become idols if they dominate our hearts. Conversely, we must avoid the trap of extreme minimalism that leads to rigid legalism—a practice Jesus consistently opposed when man-made rules overshadowed love for God.
Finding the healthy middle ground leads to contentment and a release from anxiety. Foster identifies three essential internal postures for those seeking to live with simplicity:
View all possessions as gifts from the Father rather than personal achievements.
Have confidence that God is fully capable of guarding what we have.
Freely share with others in need what God has entrusted to us.
As you reflect on today’s scripture, consider how you can invite God to help you cultivate a heart of contentment and simplicity. What is one practical shift you can make today to align your lifestyle with His truth?
