Day 14: The Greek word for Church “Ekklesia”

Read it: Matthew 16:18, Acts 2:47, Acts 9:31, Acts 13:1, Acts 14:23

Live it:

We can see that one of the terms that the 1st Century Church used to define “Church” was the Greek Word “Ekklesia.”

I absolutely love the definition of this word and how it describes the church on multiple levels.

Ekklesia – a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, an assembly.

The simple definition of Ekklesia is “an assembly.” A group of people who assemble together on a weekly basis. Your basic Sunday morning church service fits that definition well.

But the part of the definition that is so commonly overlooked is “citizens called out from their homes.” You have been called out…to be called up!

1 Peter 2:9 NLT

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
