Maybe you’re aware that the Bible was not originally written in English. With a few exceptions, it was mostly written in Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament). The New Testament speaks often on building the “church,” but that word isn’t exactly translated. The word κοινωνία “koinōnia” is more closely translated to our word “fellowship,” except it is still a noun. This is the meaning of the translated word “church” that we’re going to look at in these four scriptures today.
The church is not meant to just be four walls, a meeting place for saints, or a place off-limits from ordinary people. The church is meant to be us, together. Eating together, laughing together, crying together, walking through life together. And as you’ll see in these scriptures, it is not just together with each other but also together with God, together with the Holy Spirit.
Read through these four scriptures containing the word “koinonia,” and think about what the church means to you. Is it just something you check off your list on Sundays? Is it simply a place to meet like-minded friends? Or, are you part of the church as God intended it- in fellowship with him and others fully and truly devoted together?
