Read it: Genesis 24:1-67
Live it:
Isaac’s marriage to Rebekah was an arranged marriage. Remember, Isaac was the offspring of Abraham (age 100) and Sarah (age 90) when Isaac was born. After Sarah died, Abraham sent his household servant back to his homeland to fetch a wife for Isaac. Eliezer, the servant, was under strict orders concerning two things: Isaac was not to marry a Canaanite woman, and Isaac was not to go back to the homeland. The bride-to-be would have to be willing to come to Canaan to be married to Isaac.
Upon arriving at the town where Nahor, Abraham’s brother, had settled, Eliezer prayed. Before his prayer was complete, Rebekah, granddaughter of Nahor, came to the well to get water. Eliezer approached her. She was beautiful and of marriageable age. He asked her for a drink, which she gave him and then without being asked, also watered his camels (10 of them). Those were the terms of Eliezer’s prayer for guidance about whom he should choose to be Isaac’s wife.
Eliezer stayed with Rebeka’s family and made arrangements for Rebekah to go back to Canaan to marry Isaac. When they returned to Canaan, Isaac was walking through the fields and saw the camel caravan coming in the distance. He went to meet them. The servant told Isaac about everything that he had done.
Isaac took Rebekah to Sarah’s tent and consummated the marriage. The last verse of this rather long passage says, “He loved her deeply, and she was a special comfort to him after the death of his mother.”
