Read It: Ecclesiastes 2:1-26 Genesis 1:26-28; John 15:9-11
Live It:
Have you ever felt like life was monotonous? Didn’t I just take the trash out, is it time again already. Week after week, the same thing, the same stressors, the same feelings. Sometimes life does begin to feel a bit repetitive. The writer of Ecclesiastes here is airing his grievances on this point. But there is a key, you shouldn’t miss.
God makes it clear in the Genesis passage that we are commanded to take care of what He has given us. That means working, working hard, and doing it well. But it can truly become so easy to become disenfranchised with the day to day. The key is found in Ecclesiastes 2:24. “I decided.” Life is going to keep coming at us, we have no control over that. What we do have control over is what we decide to do about it.
John 15:9-11 promises us in the red letters (Jesus’ recorded words) that if we obey His commands we will remain in His love. We need only to decide that every day is a gift from God and view it as such. Make the choice to not be stuck in the emptiness of work day to day, it can bring you joy for a season, but in the long term the only true joy comes from deciding to view the day to day as a gift from God.
