Day 5- The Two Debtors
Read it: Luke 7:41-43
Live it:
This is one of the shortest parables we will look at this month. But don’t let that fool you. It is a high-impact story.
You will appreciate its impact more if you have the backstory: Simon, a Pharisee, had invited Jesus and his disciples to dinner. They accepted the invitation. Sometime during the banqueting, a woman of ill repute came into the dinner hall and went to Jesus. As she wept, her tears fell on Jesus’ feet. She wiped his feet with her hair, kissed them, and perfumed them. Simon became indignant and supposed that if Jesus knew who this woman was, he would rebuke her.
Jesus discerned his thoughts and responded with this parable of two debtors: One owed 500 pieces of silver and the other 50 pieces of silver. The question was which would love the most in return for being forgiven. Simon supposed that the one who had the largest debt would be the most thankful and, in turn, love the most.
Jesus’ point was that the woman had much more to be thankful for than Simon. She should be permitted to show her love. The question for us is, Does our thankfulness equal or exceed the forgiveness we have been given?
