Day 4- Wise and Foolish Builders
Read it: Luke 6:46-49
Live it:
In this parable, which is just five verses long, Jesus makes a clear distinction between those who call themselves followers and those who are truly followers of Jesus. Jesus starts many of his parables asking a question, and this one is no different. Jesus asks, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?” I want you to read Jesus’ question again. I want that to truly sink into your heart today. How many times have we said Jesus is Lord of our lives, yet we don’t live it out? We don’t do what the Bible says to do? We take revenge instead of turning the other cheek. We don’t forgive one another as we have been forgiven. We don’t love our enemies. We don’t honor our mother or father. We gossip, lie, cheat, or steal and then try to justify our actions.
There are two people in our parable today, but there is one very distinct difference between the two. Verse 47 says the first person who heard Jesus’ words obeyed them. The second person heard Jesus’ words but didn’t obey them. Then, we see that Jesus compared both of these people to builders. The first person built his house on rock, and the second built his house on sand. Both people experienced the storm, but only the house that was built on the rock stood after the storm was over.
Jesus tells us that we will have trouble in this life, and in order to withstand the trouble or the storm, we have to build our life on the Word of God. That means we can’t just hear God’s Word, but we have to obey it. We cannot just read Jesus’ teachings, but we have to follow them. We HAVE to READ God’s Word AND we HAVE to LIVE it. Jesus makes it very clear that just hearing the Truth is not enough; we have to obey it. Is there an area in your life where you are not obeying God’s word? Pray and ask God to show you areas where you need to repent and start obeying.
