Read it: 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Psalm 119:105
Live it:
In Richard Foster’s book Celebration of Discipline in the chapter titled “Study,” he defines study as a spiritual discipline that transforms the mind and shapes the whole person. Unlike simply acquiring information, study is a way of directing our attention toward truth so that our thoughts, values, and actions are changed.
Foster argues that what we consistently focus on eventually forms us. The discipline of study helps believers renew their minds and align their thinking with God’s truth. Transformation begins with how we think.
Foster contends for four steps in the study process:
Repetition
Repeated exposure to ideas, Scripture, and truth engrains them in our minds. What we revisit regularly begins to influence our habits and character.
Concentration
Study requires focused attention. Deep learning happens when distractions are removed and the mind is fully engaged.
Comprehension
We move beyond memorizing facts to understanding meaning, relationships, and implications. True study seeks insight.
Reflection
Reflection allows us to internalize what we learn and consider how it applies to life. This is where information begins to become wisdom.
With these thoughts in perspective, read the assigned Scripture passages for today, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and Psalm 119:105. Jot down two or three ways you can apply these Scriptures in light of Foster’s teaching.
