Today we are going to consider another of the compound Yahweh names of God. We will be considering Yahweh-Rapha (The Lord is my healer). As in my devotional on day 5 of this Binge the Bible, the Israelites are on their way to the Promised Land. They have crossed the Red Sea and observed the powerful hand of God as He destroyed the Egyptian army by drowning them in the Sea. They have gone three days into the Desert of Shur. They have not been able to find any water. They have come to the Oasis called Marah. Water at last! But it was nasty. They couldn’t drink it. That is until Moses threw a piece of wood into the water and it was miraculously made drinkable.
After the miracle, God spoke to the people of Israel and declared His promise that if they would be obedient to His laws and remain faithful to Him, He would not allow them to suffer the things He had brought upon the Egyptians. He ended His speech to the people by declaring Himself to be Yahweh-Rapha (the Lord who heals you).
While the promise was specifically to the Israelites, the Psalmist and the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah use the name Rapha to expand the promise to other generations and peoples. He is still our healer.
