Day 3: Widow’s Offering

Read it: Mark 12:41-44
Live it:
Jesus, watching as people drop in their gifts, is sitting near the temple offering box. Some are loudly and proudly giving large amounts. Then comes the widow. No big fanfare, no announcement. Just two small coins that probably made little sound as they hit the bottom.
But Jesus notices her. He calls over his disciples and says, ”Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.”
Wait more? How can that be?
Because our God does not measure generosity by the size of the gift but by the size of the sacrifice. The others gave from their excess– what they wouldn’t miss. She gave from her lack– what she could barely spare. She gave everything she had because her trust was not in herself but in the One who owned her heart.
So, here’s the question for today as you read this passage: What would it look like to give God something that actually costs you your time, your comfort, and/or your pride?
When we give like the widow, we reflect the heart of Jesus, who made the ultimate sacrifice.
