Read it: Luke 10:25-37
Live it: This is a very familiar story told by Jesus to reinforce teaching from what we now call the Old Testament. It was, in Jesus’ day, the Hebrew Scriptures. As on many other occasions, a religious leader asked him a question in an effort to test or trick him. But Jesus skillfully turned the question back on the religious leader by asking him what the Scriptures said. The question was, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
The religious leader answered correctly: “Love God with your whole being and love your neighbor.” Then came the follow-up question: “Who is my neighbor?”
Jesus then relates the story we call “The Good Samaritan.” This story has lots of takeaways. One of them is generosity. Please notice, as you read today’s passage, how the Samaritan used his own resources to care for the needs of the injured man by rendering “First Aid” on the roadside, transporting him to an inn, paying for his lodging and care, and promising to pay any additional expenses incurred in the man’s care when he returned at a future date.
Question to ponder: Am I generous toward others, especially those who are in need? How do I demonstrate that generosity? What can I do to increase my generosity toward people in need?
