Day 8: Ahab and Jezebel

Read it: 1 Kings 16:29-33; 1 Kings 21:1-16

Live it:

The relationship between Ahab and Jezebel is the story of two bad characters whose combined forces took evil to a new level. Jezebel was a rebellious, stubborn, selfish and prideful queen who was determined to have her own way. She let nothing, including murder, stop her from getting what she wanted.

Ahab was a weak, godless king who allowed Jezebel to control Israel’s religious worship and eventually devoted himself to the worship of false gods. He distinguished himself by doing more to provoke the anger of the Lord–the God of Israel–than any of the other kings of Israel before him (1 Kings 16:33).

The prophet Elijah foretold the violent and tragic ends awaiting Ahab, Jezebel, and their entire family for their rebellion against the Lord.

This cautionary tale warns us to carefully choose our friends and life partners. They can build us up or tear us down. The apostle Paul reminds us that “bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

Think about who you are spending time with in person and digitally. Is their influence making you a better person? Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in all your relationships today and everyday so that you might spend time with those who build you up in your faith.
