Day 9: Simplicity
Read it: Matthew 6:19-34
Live it:
The spiritual discipline of simplicity does not mean choosing to live a life with no creature comforts. There, I said it. You can lead a simple life and have just enough to pay for your monthly needs. You can lead a simple life and have running water and a flushing toilet. You can lead a simple life and own two homes. You can lead a simple life and drive an Aston Martin. You probably felt an … “Are you sure about that?” … at some point as you were reading that list, but who chooses when?
This passage of Matthew is a red letter passage- meaning that it is a quote from Jesus. Jesus clearly shows us when to draw the line. The key to the spiritual discipline of simplicity is not at all how much or how little you have. The key is found in vs. 33 of our reading today.
The way to find simplicity is to seek the Kingdom of God above all else. When you are seeking His Kingdom, truly above all else, you will have simplicity. You will have all that you need.
Today I challenge you as you read this scripture to examine your heart. In what areas are you not seeking God first?
